How to Spend a Day in Victoria

Bist du auch ein grosser Fan von Städtetrips? Wenn ja, dann bist du hier genau richtig, denn heute spreche ich über unseren letzten Städtetrip!

Leider sind die Möglichkeiten in BC ein wenig beschränkt und es gibt vor allem einen möglichen Städtetrip – Victoria. Letztes Wochenende sind wir also in die Hauptstadt British Columbias gefahren – wie wir da hinkamen, was wir gesehen haben, wo wir gegessen haben – meine Eindrücke!

6.00 Uhr

Der Wecker klingelt und jede Faser meines Körpers sträubt sich dagegen an einem Sonntag um sechs Uhr aufzustehen. Eine unmenschliche Zeit, die ich schon unter der Woche eine Zumutung finde!! Nach einer kalten Dusche erwecken die Lebensgeister langsam und mein Reiseinstinkt ist geweckt.

8.00 Uhr

Wir nehmen die Canada Line (Metro) zur Bridgeport Station und dann den Bus 602 zum Tsawwassen Hafen. Rechnet hier mindestens eine Stunde ein. Wir erreichen den Hafen um etwa 8.20 und es bleibt uns genügend Zeit, die Tickets zu kaufen und einen dringend nötigen Kaffee zu trinken.

9.00 Uhr

Die Überfahrt nach Vancouver Island geht los. Viele sind der Ansicht, dass sich eine Reise nach Victoria schon alleine wegen der Überfahrt lohnt. In der Tat – letztes Mal, als ich mit meinen Eltern nach Victoria fuhr, sahen wir einen Orka von der Fähre aus. Ein unvergessliches Erlebnis! Dieses Mal haben wir nicht so viel Glück, aber wir geniessen die wunderschöne Fahrt durch die kleinen Inseln vor Vancouver Island trotzdem.

Fun Fact: Man fährt mit der Fähre durch amerikanisches Gewässer, so nahe sind wir hier an der Grenze!

10.00 Uhr

Endlich sind wir auf Vancouver Island. Hier ein kleiner Gratistipp: Wenn die Fähre die Insel erreicht, dann beilt euch, damit ihr auch einen Platz im Schnellbus ergattern könnt.

Leider machen wir genau diesen Anfängerfehler, schlendern gemütlich von der Fähre und sehen eine riesige Schlange vor dem Bus. Keine Chance, hier noch einen Platz zu ergattern!

Wir müssen also 30 Minuten warten und nehmen dann den Bummler-Bus. Nicht zu empfehlen! Merkt euch: Die Nummer 70 ist der Schnellbus, die Nummer 72 der Bummler.

11.30 Uhr

Endlich sind wir in Victoria angekommen und unser Magen knurrt. Nach einem kurzen Spaziergang durch die Altstadt entscheiden wir uns für das Restaurant “The Local“. Von dort haben wir eine gute Sicht über den Hafen und die vielen Fussgänger. Wir essen Chicken Wings und Mac’n’Cheese Sommerspecial, beides war sehr gut und preiswert (so gut, dass ich sogar vergessen habe, ein Foto zu machen:)). Das Beste war allerdings der Mai Thai, der perfekte Sommerdrink!

13.00 Uhr

Da wir Beide schon mehrere Male in Victoria waren, haben wir überhaupt keinen Stress und unser Plan ist es, den Tag gemütlich anzugehen.

Für Eduardo ist es ein Must, einen BeaverTail zu essen, wenn er in Victoria ist. Klingt übel, ist aber nur eine Süssigkeit. 🙂 Hier findet ihr mehr dazu.

Einer meiner liebsten Orte in Victoria ist definitiv der Hafen. Von dort hat man eine wunderschöne Sicht auf das Parlament und vieles erinnert mich hier an Europa.

Wir schlendern also dem Hafen entlang und sehen schon von Weitem, dass vor dem Parlament etwas los ist. Hunderte von Menschen sitzen und stehen im Park vor dem Parlament. Beim näher Herankommen sehen wir, dass es sich um eine Musikaufführung von verschiedenen Highschool Bands handelt. Jede Band spielt einen Song und räumt dann die Bühne für die Nächsten. Wir wären aber nicht in Nordamerika, wenn nicht jede Band mit Cheerleader, Flagge und Tänzerinnen auftreten würde. Was für ein Spektakel!

Nach diesem musikalischen Highlight gehen wir zur Fisherman’s Wharf, einem schwimmenden Dorf. Ich liebe diese kleinen, farbigen Häuser und will mir vor allem ein Highlight nicht entgehen lassen: Die Seerobben. Rund um das Dorf leben einige Seerobben und der lokale Fischstand verkauft Fische, die man an die Seerobben verfüttern kann. Diese warten natürlich nur darauf und ziehen ein riesen Show ab, um einen der begehrten Fische zu ergattern.

Zwischen all den Seerobben schwimmt auch ein kleiner Otter, den darf man allerdings nicht füttern, da er dann aggressiv wird und im Dorf nach weiterer Nahrung sucht.

Nach der Fishermen’s Wharf geht es wieder zurück zum Parlament – im Park wird die Sonne genossen und ein Eis gegessen.

17.30 Uhr

Nach fast sechs Stunden in Victoria, entscheiden wir uns, den Bus zurück zu nehmen, damit wir zu einer vernünftigen Zeit in Vancouver ankommen und den Tag mit einem schönen Abendessen beenden können. Wir nehmen also den Bus (dieses Mal den Express Bus) und sind pünktlich um 18.30 Uhr am Hafen. Doch die 19-Uhr-Fähre ist schon voll, 2100 Menschen sollen auf der Fähre sein. Wir müssen also bis 21 Uhr warten, um die nächste (und letzte!) Fähre zum Festland zu nehmen. Aus dem schönen Abendessen wird ein romantisches Pizzaessen am Fährenhafen von Vancouver Island. 😀

21.00 Uhr

Endlich geht es los und wir werden mit einem wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang für unsere Warterei belohnt. Die Fahrt zurück ist wirklich magisch und ich geniesse diese Stunde auf dem Boot sehr.

Als wir das Festland erreichen, wissen wir, dass es genau noch einen Bus zurück in die Stadt gibt, bevor die einzige Option Taxi heisst. Wir machen also Usain Bolt alle Ehre und sprinteten zum Bus. Geschafft!!

Mitternacht

Todmüde fallen wir kurz nach Mitternacht ins Bett. Der Tag war wunderschön, auch wenn die Heimreise ein wenig anstrendend war. Aber wir lassen uns davon nicht beirren, schliesslich sollte man sich einen solchen Tag nicht davon verderben lassen. Die mexikanische Gelassenheit hinterlässt langsam seine Spuren bei mir! 🙂

Natürlich gibt es in Victoria viel mehr zu sehen und das möchte ich euch nicht vorenthalten. Hier also ein paar Sehenswürdigkeiten, die ihr euch nicht entgehen lassen solltet:

• Falls ihr mehrere Tage in Victoria oder auf Vancouver Island verbringt, dann kann ich euch die Butchard Gardens nur wärmstens empfehlen. Diese Gärten sind ein wenig ausserhalb der Stadt. Ich hatte leider selber noch nicht die Möglichkeit, mir die Butchard Gardens anzuschauen, aber ich habe nur Gutes gehört.
• Munro’s Books: Falls du ein Bücherwurm bist, solltest du auf jeden Fall dieser Buchhandlung einen Besuch abstatten. Der Begriff Buchladen ist hier schon fast untertrieben, es ist eher eine Buchhalle. Architektonisch sehenswert und eine tolle Atmosphäre, um Bücher zu kaufen.
• Im Moment gibt es in Victoria eine Terry Fox Ausstellung zu sehen, die auch sehr spannend sein muss. Falls ihr nicht wisst, wer Terry Fox ist, hier findet ihr mehr über den kanadischen Helden.
• Das Royal BC Museum ist ebenfalls in Victoria. Auch hier war ich noch nie, aber das Wetter war einfach zu schön, um ins Museum zu gehen.
• Emily Carr ist eine berühmte, kanadische Malerin und ihr Haus aus Kindestagen steht mitten in Victoria. Schaut euch das auf jeden Fall an!

Do you love city trips as much as I do? Well, then you’re on the right page, today I will talk about our most recent city trip!!

In BC, the options are really limited compared to Europe, everything is just so far away. But hey, I won’t complain, there are still some amazing trips to do. One of them is to Victoria. Last weekend, my boyfriend and I enjoyed a beautiful day in BC’s capital. How we got there, what we saw, where we ate – my impressions.

6am

The alarm goes off – it’s Sunday morning and every inch of my body just wants to stay in bed. Getting up at 6am on a Sunday is just crazy and it already drives me nuts during the week. After a cold shower, my body slowly starts to wake up, getting ready for the day trip.

8am

We are traveling by public transport to Victoria – a wise choice on a long weekend, where streets and ferries are just packed with people. So, we take the Canada Line to Bridgeport Station and from there the 602 bus to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. We arrive around 8.20am –  enough time to get the tickets and to buy a much needed coffee in the market hall next to the terminal.

9am

The ferry takes off and with it the beautiful journey to Victoria begins. Some people say that going to Victoria is already worth it just because of the ferry ride. And they are right, the ferry ride is absolutely beautiful. Once, when I went with my parents, we were lucky enough to see an orca. That was amazing. This time we aren’t that lucky but we’re still enjoying the sunny weather and the beautiful landscape on the deck.

Fun Fact: When you are travelling to Victoria, you are crossing American sea – we are that close to the US boarder!

10am

Arriving on Vancouver Island, it’s time to take the bus to Victoria. Let me tell you one thing: Just hurry when you leave the boat, so you will definitely get a spot on the bus.

We commit that rookie mistake and when we step out of the ferry there is a huge line in front of the bus. No chance for us to get into the Express bus. After about 30 minutes, the next bus arrives, the 72. There are two buses, the 70 and the 72. Make sure you get the 70, it will get you straight to Victoria within one hour while the other one stops at every corner.

11.30am

We are finally in Victoria, craving for some food. After a little walk through the local market, we decide to have lunch at a restaurant called “The Local” where we have a great view on the port and on the people who are strolling through the town. We order some wings and the mac’n’cheese summer special, both are really good. The best though is the Mai Thai, perfect for a hot day (It was so good, that I forgot to take a picture of it)!

1pm

We both have been to Victoria before, so we know the town a little bit. First, we’re strolling through the town and my boyfriend gets the mandatory BeaverTail (What the hell is that?!? Click here). I chose to go for an ice-cream but I end up stealing many bites of the delicious BeaverTail.
One of my favorite views in Victoria is definitely at the harbor. It reminds me so much of Europe with the cute harbor and the impressive parliament in the back.

Looking over the harbor to the Parliament, we realize that there is something big going on. There are so many people sitting and standing on the grass in front of the parliament. When we’re getting closer, we realize that there is a music competition between different high school bands going on. One band after the other gets on stage and performs one song. But we wouldn’t be in North America, if they wouldn’t come on stage with cheerleaders, national flags and dancers.

Our next stop is the Fisherman’s Wharf. I just love that little village on the water with all the colorful little houses. It’s literally a swimming village with houses, restaurants and tourist attractions. One of the biggest attractions are the seals. They are swimming around the village waiting for their food. In a bar close by you can buy fish and feed the seals. There is also an otter but you’re not allowed to feed him because he could get aggressive and go into the village to get more food.

After the Fisherman’s Wharf we’re going back to the Parliament, sitting in the sun and just enjoying the beautiful weather and another ice cream. Let’s be honest, we could have done more, but we loved this relaxed day in Victoria.

5.30pm

After six hours in Victoria, we decide to take the bus to the ferry terminal to be back in Vancouver on a decent time. Our plan is it to have a nice dinner back in Vancouver to finish that beautiful day. We’re taking the bus (this time the 70 – yaaay) and arrive perfectly on time at 6.30 at the ferry terminal. Well, we knew that we won’t be the only one at the terminal but we didn’t expect that!! Arriving at 6.30pm the 7-o’clock-ferry is already full with about 2100 people on board. The next (and last) one will take off at 9pm. So, instead of a nice dinner in Vancouver, we’re having a romantic pizza dinner at the ferry terminal on Vancouver Island. 😀

9pm

We are finally on the ferry and are rewarded with a beautiful sunset on the water. I love this hour on the boat and it makes me realize once again why I fell in love with this country in the first place.

When we’re arriving at the ferry terminal back on the continent, we know that there is only one bus left to the city and more than thousand people on the boat. So we run like Usain Bolt and make it to the bus as one of the first ones. Strike!

Midnight

Lights out, we are home, sun burnt, tired but happy. That was a wonderful day and it was so good to get one day out of the city. We definitely have to do that more often.

There is much more to do in Victoria – for sunny and rainy days. I still want to share these things with you:

• If you visit Victoria/Vancouver Island for a couple of days, make sure that you will check out the Butchard Gardens. I haven’t been there before but I heard that they are absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a visit. The Gardens are a little bit outside of the city.
• Munro’s Books: If you are a bookworm, you should definitely check out that book store. It’s more a book hall than a book store, a huge place with really great architecture. It’s such a special atmosphere to buy books. Munro’s Books is right in Downtown on Government Street.
• There is a Terry Fox Exhibition right now in Victoria. If you don’t know who Terry Fox is, read more about him here. He is definitely someone you should know.
• The Royal BC Museum is another things that I didn’t visit yet in Victoria, I definitely have to go back. But this time the weather was just too nice for the museum.
• Emily Carr is a famous Canadian painter and her childhood house is right in the middle of downtown. Don’t miss that!
